Donald Smith, later the 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal, was a shareholder of Hudson's Bay Company. He was given administrative control over Labrador, establishing the fur trade and salmon fishery. The Lord Strathcona Interpretation Centre is a replica of the house Donald Smith lived in during his time in Rigolet. Donald Smith was a figure in creating the Canadian Pacific Railway; he also donated to universities, leaving a legacy with parks, streets, school and ships named for him.
