Welcome to the Eastern Region

The eastern region also lays claim to scenic driving trails and several provincial parks where you can camp, hike, and boat. The Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark on the Bonavista Peninsula is home to 10 geosites that will bring you back half a billion years. Surrounded by sweeping coastal landscapes, the French islands of Saint–Pierre et Miquelon can be reached by a short ferry trip from the town of Fortune on the Heritage Run.

Centuries ago, towns in the eastern region rivalled St. John’s as the fishing capital of North America. Today, the pace of life is more relaxed, and they instead lay claim to being some of the most historic and beautiful communities on the continent. You’ll see quaint English architecture, winding streets, and breathtaking seascapes, which are perfect for whale, bird, and iceberg watching. As well as hiking and boat trips. You’ll find some of the most beautiful walking trails on the island weaving through land richly populated with migratory birds, like kittiwakes, gannets, great–backed gulls, and puffins.

Throughout the entire region you’ll discover a vibrant sense of culture and artistry. Experience performance events like the renowned Trinity Pageant and step inside the memories of a long–ago time. It’s all part of the charm and personality of eastern Newfoundland and Labrador.

Explore coastal trails overlooking sweeping bays and oceanside towns, with amazing sea stacks and caves. Choose your own adventure across the Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark. Near Trinity, the Skerwink Trail was named a Travel + Leisure ‘Top Walk’. This 5.3–kilometre coastal trail features beaches, arches, and sea stacks with off–kilter names like Music Box and Flat Fish.

Discover Newfoundland and Labrador’s long, colourful history. The Ryan Premises National Historic Site in Bonavista commemorates the rich history of the Newfoundland cod fishery, while the Cooperage and Green Family Forge in Trinity evoke a tradition of craftsmanship. The Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark is a 280–kilometre–long celebration of how geology shaped our communities and culture. From Fortune to Elliston, there’s plenty to explore.

The Seasons in the Bight Theatre Festival brings inspirational Newfoundland and Labrador stories to life through plays, dinner theatre, and concerts. And the Grand Bank Regional Theatre attracts world–class talent for its summer season. Throughout the year communities across the region get together for singing and dancing, church suppers, and family concerts.
