The Museums and Galleries of St. John's

Admiralty House Museum and Archives View fascinating artifacts and hear once top secret stories. This historic building was originally constructed in 1914 by the Marconi Telegraph Co. during World War I as the top secret H.M. Wireless Station for the British Royal Navy. This station, now the last standing of 13 around the world, was built to intercept secret German naval transmissions, and track icebergs and ships in distress. Find out more, visit them online.

Peter Lewis Gallery Located in the heart of downtown inside one of the city’s gorgeous heritage homes, see the world through the eyes of Peter Lewis. His colourful and vibrant artwork depicts the landscapes of Newfoundland, Italy, France, Arizona, and more. Visit the Peter Lewis Gallery online.

The Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador operates both a Gallery and Fine Craft Shop in St. John's. Whether you are looking for a small keepsake, or an addition to a fine craft collection, be sure to visit the Craft Council Shop and Gallery. The Shop carries the beautiful works of 150+ juried craftspeople working in a multitude of styles and mediums. While the Gallery has approximately 25 exhibitions a year, each showcasing exceptional one of a kind Fine Craft.

St. Michael’s Printshop St. Michael’s Printshop is an artist-run print studio which provides professional fine art printmaking facilities for both established and emerging artists. The Printshop is used as a space to attract visual artists who wish to explore printmaking for the first time through workshops with both local and visiting printmakers. They hold an “Open House” on the first Saturday of each month, inviting individuals of all ages to come to the studio, work with an artist, and try a new technique. The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery and Museum The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery houses two floors of galleries with 10,000 square feet of exhibit space. See selections from over 7,000 works in the permanent collection and travelling exhibits from around the world. New this month, renowned Newfoundland and Labrador artist Mary Pratt is celebrated in a 50-year retrospective exhibition of her work. The Rooms Provincial Museum tells the stories of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. There are three floors of exhibit space that give the Museum the capacity to extensively interpret our past. In addition to the sample of museum and galleries mentioned above, St. John’s and surrounding area is home to 13 provincial and national historic sites, and other unique attractions where you can get your hands dirty, be interactive and experience something new. We’ve got an underground mine tour, an officer’s club housing hundreds of military artifacts, and an archaeological site dating back to 1671 (just to name a few).
