Fortunately for us, the immense beauty of this place has been captured on film, making appearances in a variety of different movies and TV shows – it's like being transported to Newfoundland and Labrador from the comfort of your living room. With rare glimpses of sweeping vistas, grassy hillsides, and seamlessly endless coastlines, you can start imagining yourself here before you ever leave your couch. Start going off the beaten path with some of these titles:

Films

1. Peter Pan & Wendy

Filmed in part on the Bonavista Peninsula in the summer of 2021, this classic story follows a girl and her brothers who find themselves on a thrilling adventure with a boy who refuses to grow up. Scenes from the film showcase fields of wind-whipped grass and rugged shorelines that our fair province is known and loved for.

3. Rare Birds

Rare Birds showcases the breathtaking scenery from Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America.

4. Love & Savagery

Get a glimpse of St. John’s circa 1968 in Love & Savagery. This film was shot on location in St. John’s as well as in County Clare, Ireland.

5. The Shipping News

A variety of coastal backdrops in the province shape The Shipping News with its stark and beautiful landscapes. Some locations include Corner Brook, New Bonaventure, and Trinity.

6. Hold Fast

Explore the film Hold Fast and see Newfoundland and Labrador’s expansive wilderness in this journey of self-discovery.

7. Aquaman

There have been many productions either partially or fully shot in the province. Aquaman is a great example of a motion picture that filmed several scenes / landscapes and exteriors here, including in Petty Harbour. Aquaman makes our list more as an honorable mention.

8. The King Tide

Mainly filmed in Keels and directed by Newfoundland and Labrador's Christian Sparkes, The King Tide showcases our coastal communities in an eerie way that is sure to have you on the edge of your seat.

9. Maudie

Maudie, a biographical drama about folk artist Maud Lewis, was filmed in the Goulds, an area known for its rich farmland located just outside of St. John's.

10. Outlander

Filmed in the Bay of Islands, Outlander mixes futuristic science-fiction with the historic Viking age. Our rugged coastline was the perfect backdrop for this action film.

TV Shows

1. Republic of Doyle

Republic of Doyle puts colourful St. John’s on full display in this P.I. comedy drama series.

2. Random Passage

Take a step back in time to see the struggle and opportunity of early settlers to Newfoundland and Labrador in Random Passage.

3. Frontier

Frontier is a historical TV drama is set in the 18th-century fur trade of the Canadian north. Filmed partly in Newfoundland and Labrador, the series showcases both the history and unspoiled wilderness of the province.

4. Hudson and Rex

Hudson and Rex is filmed in and around St. John's. Watching this K9 cop show is a great way to see pieces of the city.

5. Rock Solid Builds

Rock Solid Builds is a reality show filmed in and around picturesque and historic Brigus.

6. Caught

Caught is a series which was filmed and partially set in Newfoundland and Labrador, starring Allan Hawco. 

7. Astrid & Lilly Save the World

In Astrid & Lilly Save the World, two best friends accidentally crack open a portal to a monster dimension. The majority of the series was shot on location in St. John's.

8. Son of a Critch

This coming-of-age story is based on the childhood and adolescence of comedian Mark Critch. Son of a Critch is filmed entirely here in Newfoundland and Labrador.
