Fortune Head Geology Centre


Take a walk through time, when early animals burrowed the earth 4.54 billion years ago! Uncover how geology impacts our lives and gain a deeper understanding of our existence. Geological highlights include an extensive rock, fossil, and mineral collection, prehistoric predators, and natural disasters including the 1929 Burin Tsunami. Take a guided tour of the Fortune Head Ecological Reserve, where trace fossils were discovered, or engage in a fossil find along the Horsebrook Trail.

This educational facility has six exhibit galleries identifying geologic time, and houses an extensive rock, mineral and fossil collection. Our Geology Interpreters are able to provide guided tours to the significant fossil find at the Fortune Head Ecological Reserve. We also offer theme-oriented products at the Fortune Fossil Shop; a small coffee/snack bar, and a visitor information desk. Also within walking distance are the George and Mary Lake Heritage House and fishing stages.

Helpful Information

Exhibit $5 for children, $7.50 for adults. Exhibit and geological tour $10-$20 per person. Ask about our family rates.
