Step into our past
The Ryan Premises National Historic Site, Bonavista, Newfoundland

Immerse yourself in the vibrant history of Newfoundland and Labrador by travelling to one of our many National and Provincial Historic sites, or by visiting any of our provincial, community and industrial museums and interpretation centres. Whether you prefer to read, view or experience history, you’ll find something that "tickles your fancy".

We, as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, have long been proud to showcase our history, culture, achievements, communities, and industries. Museums have been traced back to the early nineteenth century—though most of the more established institutions are post-1965. St. John’s seems to have been the pioneer in the field, with a recorded display of a "Cabinet of Curiosities" at the Free Mason’s Tavern on Solomon’s Lane in 1817.

Enjoy a workshop, performance, event, or exhibit from a renowned local or international artist. Explore the lives of aboriginal peoples and investigate the tools used by the first settlers. Learn about the elusive giant squid or compare what you see today to what was 200 years ago. Where else can you walk down abandoned mine shafts hundreds of metres below the floor of the Atlantic Ocean?

Our museums span our coastlines and cross our inlands along the north coast of Labrador to the southern shores of Newfoundland. In the mountain-lined city of Corner Brook and the brilliant hillsides of L’Anse Aux Meadows. Through the quaint communities of Twillingate and North West River, and the historic areas of Trinity and Battle Harbour. No matter where you find yourself in your journey throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, there will always be a piece of history for you to experience.
