Creativity lives large at the edge of the Earth

Wood carving in Newfoundland and Labrador What, exactly, is creativity? And where does it come from? Perhaps it is a result of the imagination gone wild, running without limits towards the unimaginable. Does it come from sheer necessity – from the incredible will to survive? Or are we just born with it, infused into our very DNA – there from the start, shaping not only everything we do, but how we see the world.

Here, in this terrible beauty of a place by the sea, it’s probably equal parts inspiration and instinct. Woven into both our natural fibre and the natural world, this innate and inspired creativity touching all that we are and all that we do. It’s what links our past and our present, and blends our heritage and traditions with our values and vitality.

In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a more implicitly creative place, culture, or people than right here on the edge of North America. Where whales and icebergs cross paths just off our shores. And the most genuine people have carved a remarkable way of life out of nothing but ingenuity, inventiveness, and a warm sense of humour that stirs the soul.

And though this creativity exists as an entity all its own, you’ll find it expressed in the most colourful ways through our music, poetry, art, language, craftsmanship, and unique architecture.  Displayed with pride in galleries, film festivals, and artist symposiums along the way.

So, despite whatever questions there may be surrounding its origin, one thing’s for sure.  Creativity is here in disproportionate abundance, and it’s here to stay. For more information about our creative craftsmanship and local artists, visit the Newfoundland and Labrador Craft Council Studio Guide.
